The northeastern Aukštaitija variant passes through a quietly beautiful landscape of lakes, forests and limestone-rich terrain. This second stage arrives at Biržai — a town unlike anywhere else on the Camino. Known as the heartland of Lithuanian Calvinism, Biržai has a unique religious heritage shaped by the powerful Radziwiłł family in the 17th century. The town sits above a vast karst landscape pitted with sinkholes.
The fortress-like Reformed (Calvinist) church and the reconstructed Biržai Castle are unmissable highlights. The local beer, brewed in Biržai since the 18th century, is also famous throughout Lithuania.
